Cub Scout Uniforms

Cub Scout Uniforms

Everything you need to know about what to buy, where to get it, and how to save money.

The uniform checklist

Every Cub Scout needs these items. Tip: buy a Medium shirt — scouts grow fast and you don't want to re-sew patches!

  • Uniform Shirt
Blue for Lions–Bears & Webelos; Tan for Arrow of Light & BSA. Buy a size up — it'll last years.
  • National Capital Area Council (NCAC) Patch may be pre-sewn
Large shoulder patch identifying your local council.
  • BSA World Crest may be pre-sewn
Small, round, purplish patch worn above the left pocket.
  • Den Number Patch
Small, rectangular, red patch — your scout's den identifier.
  • Hat, Neckerchief & Slide
    Color varies by rank: Tiger = Orange · Wolf = Red · Bear = Blue · Webelos/AOL = Plaid
  • Belt
Required to display all the belt loops your scout will earn throughout the year.

** The NCAC patch and BSA World Crest may already be sewn onto the shirt when you purchase it — check before buying separately.

🎨 Neckerchief Colors by Rank
Lion — Lion colored
Tiger — Orange
Wolf — Red
Bear — Blue
Webelos & AOL — Plaid

Changing to the Webelos Uniform

When your scout enters Webelos, they have two uniform options. Both are acceptable — choose what works best for your family.

Option A — Keep the Blue Shirt
Blue Cub Scout Shirt
  • Wear existing blue shirt with plaid Webelos hat, neckerchief & slide
  • Blue, blue-jean, or khaki shorts; belt with belt loops
  • Webelos color ribbons worn under den patch (all pins go on ribbons)
  • Earn Webelos patch in February after completing all requirements — replaces earlier rank patches
Option B — Upgrade to Tan BSA Shirt
Tan BSA Shirt
  • Wear tan shirt with plaid Webelos hat, neckerchief & slide
  • Green, blue-jean, or khaki shorts; belt with belt loops
  • Purchase blue epaulettes for shoulder loops
  • Sew on Pack 888 patch with 50-year bar; religious knot if earned
  • Webelos color ribbons under den patch; all pins on ribbons
  • NCAC patch and purple Scout Crest usually pre-sewn on new tan shirts
  • Sew on den number, Journey to Excellence patch, outdoor activity patch optional
  • Display prior rank patches (Bobcat/Tiger/Wolf/Bear) on left pocket until February optional

⚠️ If buying a microfiber shirt, use a microfiber needle in your sewing machine — standard needles can pull the fabric.
